Biography

Mayor Curtis L. Pickels was born in Moultrie, Georgia and is married to Mrs. Ola Chastain Pickels of Rome, Georgia.  Chairman Pickels received a degree in pre-pharmacy from Norman Junior College followed by a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia.  A local business owner, Chairman Pickels is the owner of Lee & Pickels Drugs, Inc in Quitman, Georgia and the President of Satinwood LLC Land Development Co. located in Coastal Florida.

Mayor Pickels served as Quitman City Council member from 1989-1997 and returned to serve again in 2006.  He also presently serves as the Chairman of the Citizens National Bank Board of Directors, serves on the Southern School of Pharmacy Alumni Committee, is the Chairman of the Brooks County Hospital Authority, is a member of the Mercer University Board of Trustees, and a member of the Quitman/Brooks County Chamber of Commerce.  Mayor and Mrs. Pickels are members of the First Baptist Church in Quitman, where Curtis serves as Decon, Sunday School Teacher and Director, and a Trustee.  Chairman Pickels has also served as on the Brooks County Board of Education (1974-1986, Chairman 1980-1986) and the Quitman Chapter of the Kiwanis Club (1970-1983).

Mayor Pickels has also completed the FEMA, GEMA, and Georgia Municipal Training for City Government Officials and serves as the City Council's representative on several additional boards.  During his extensive career, Mayor Pickels has participated in countless revitalization and renovation projects throughout Quitman as well as worked on several grants for water, sewer, street, and emergency management services and has voted for programs to make Quitman a self-serve City, including cable and wireless internet programs.

During his free time, Mayor Pickels can most likely be found on the golf course, but also enjoys fishing, gardening and reading.  Mayor and Mrs. Pickels have been married over 40 years and have a miniture poodle, Beanie.

Biography

Annie D. "Tootsie" Bower is the City Council member for District 2. Ms. Bower also serves as Mayor Pro-tem. Born in Brooks County, Tootsie worked as the City Clerk-Treasury for the City of Quitman for 23 after which has served as a Council member since November of 1997.

Ms. Bower's extensive training includes the Georgia Municipal Training Certificates of Recognition, Achievement, and Excellence and has completed 144 hours of Municipal Government Courses.  During her years as a Council member, Ms. Bower has been instrumental in installing a wireless internet system, has worked on grants for water, sewer and street improvements, helped to update Quitman's Code, worked to purchase a new fire truck and hire new fire department employees and upgraded all utility lines.

The wife of the late Burke Bower, Mrs. Bower has one daughter Jeannie who resides in Cummings, Georgia.

Biography

Virgil "Pete" Walker, Jr. has served as City Council member for the past 33 years.  Born and raised in Brooks County, Pete is a graduate of Brooks County High School and South Georgia College.  He has also completed the FEMA, GEMA, and Georgia Municipal Training for City Government Officials and serves on several boards.  Married to Cindy Walker, the two have 3 children: Andy, Cathy, and Carrie.

During his extensive career, Mr. Walker has participated in countless revitalization and renovation projects throughout Quitman as well as worked on several grants for water, sewer, street, and emergency management services and has voted for programs to make Quitman a self-serve City, including cable and wireless internet programs.

Biography

C. Gerald Spencer serves as the City Attorney and has held this position for over 30 years.  As the City Attorney, Mr. Spencer handles all legal issues and code creation for the City Council.

Born in Alachua, Florida, Gerald is married to Lynn Wat Spencer and the couple have two daughters: Kimberly Spencer Clark and Kristina Spencer Morris. 

 

 Mr. Spencer has an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and a Jurors Doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law.
